Why This Loom Fails — Same Problem, Different Hatch
The four-door rear hatch on Suburban, Tahoe and Yukon carries the same category of electrical circuits as the two-door Blazer's tailgate — reverse lights, number plate lights, rear washer, and on many trucks a rear wiper and rear window defrost. That wiring has to travel from the body, through the hatch hinge, into a hatch that opens and closes every single day.
The physics are identical to the two-door problem: the hinge flexes on every open and close, and after thirty years in a hot climate the insulation goes brittle and the copper work-hardens inside it. The wire cracks at the flex point while the outer insulation still looks intact, which is why the fault reads as intermittent — the broken ends touch and separate as the hatch moves. GM has documented this exact failure pattern formally on the later-generation full-size SUVs (TSB 07-08-47-005B, for the harness routed through the rubber boot at the top of the liftgate), and GMT400 Tahoe and Suburban owners report the same reverse-light and rear-wiper symptoms on the forums, which points to the same underlying design.
Quick diagnosis test: With the hatch closed and the ignition on, engage reverse and observe the reverse lights. Now slowly open the hatch while watching — if the lights flicker, change brightness or come on as you move the hatch, the hinge loom has failed. The fault is mechanical, not electrical.

Do not splice and tape the existing loom. Splicing the broken wire inside the existing loom and wrapping with tape is a temporary fix that will fail again, often sooner than the original, because the splice adds a stiff point that concentrates flex stress differently. The correct repair is a new loom section routed through the hinge with appropriate flex-resistant conduit — this is generic electrical stock, not a specialist part, and shouldn't need to be imported.

The Process
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal before any work on electrical circuits.

- Connect new wires at the body end using weatherproof connectors — never bare twisted joins in a location exposed to moisture and flex.
- Connect at the hatch end to the original circuit. Protect all connections with adhesive heat shrink and dielectric grease.
- Secure the new loom to the hinge with cable ties — leave enough slack at the pivot point to allow full hatch movement without tension on the wires.
- Reconnect battery. Test all circuits through full hatch movement — open, closed, halfway. All lights should function in every position.
- Replace bulbs in reverse lights and number plate lights while access is easy.
