Why the Stock Alternator Runs Out of Road
The factory CS130 alternator on a GMT400 is rated around 100–105A, which was plenty for a 1990s truck with a stereo, headlights and not much else. It is not plenty for a truck that's picked up dual batteries, an electric cooling fan, off-road lighting, a proper stereo and a phone charger or two since then. The alternator itself starts sagging under sustained load, and the wiring that was sized for 100A starts to become the bottleneck even if you fix the alternator.
The CS144 is the common upgrade path — physically similar mounting to the CS130, rated around 140A, and widely swapped within the GM truck community. It is not a pure bolt-on: the electrical connector differs from the CS130 and needs an adapter or pigtail, and depending on your specific bracket and pulley you may need to do some minor fitting. Budget time for that rather than assuming a 10-minute swap.

"Big-3" traditionally means three heavy cables: battery negative to chassis, battery negative to engine block (or engine to chassis, same job), and battery positive to the alternator. If you've done 2.1 — Grounding Kit, you've already built the first two. This guide does not repeat that work — it only covers what's actually new.

Battery → Alternator
The genuinely new cable. This is the positive charging feed, not a ground, and the grounding kit never touched it. This is what this guide actually adds.
If you're staying at 140A, the 4-gauge cable from the grounding kit is generally adequate for the two ground legs. If you go beyond the CS144 to something like an AD244 or a high-output rebuild, upsizing those two cables to 1-gauge or 1/0 alongside the new alternator feed is the more conservative choice — that's a judgment call based on your actual accessory load, not a fixed rule.

The connector adapter is the detail people miss. Turning up with a new alternator and a factory CS130 plug that doesn't fit is the single most common way this job stalls halfway through.

The Process
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal before starting.
- Remove the serpentine belt and the existing CS130 alternator. Note the bracket and bolt arrangement — photograph before removing.
- Test-fit the CS144 on the existing bracket. If it doesn't sit cleanly, this is where the minor fitting work flagged above comes in — do not force it.
- Fit the connector pigtail/adapter to the CS144's plug, matching it to the factory harness wire for wire.
- Route and connect the new battery-positive-to-alternator cable, protected by the in-line fuse or fusible link, using ring terminals torqued correctly at both ends.
- Fit the serpentine belt — confirm correct tension and that it tracks true on all pulleys.
- Reconnect the battery negative terminal.
- Start the engine and check charging voltage at idle and at a fast idle, with accessories on and off, before considering the job finished.
Hand This Over
