Purpose & Rationale

Two Different Sports Wearing the Same Gear List

A lot of off-road preparation content assumes rocks, mud, and technical trail obstacles, because that's the dominant culture where most of it gets written. GCC off-roading is overwhelmingly dune driving, soft sand, momentum, and flotation, a genuinely different discipline with different priorities. Transplant a US parts list onto that without checking and you end up over-investing in the wrong things, a lift kit for clearance you don't need, while under-investing in the thing that actually matters most out here, how fast and precisely you can manage tyre pressure.

Tyres & Air Management

The Actual Core Skill, Not a Footnote

Every credible GCC source on this agrees, tyre pressure management is the single most important thing to get right, and it's not just about knowing your target PSI, it's about your ability to actually get there quickly and repeatably, on four or six tyres, every time you go out and every time you come back.

Typical range is roughly 14-18 PSI for general dune driving, down to around 12 PSI for deep soft sand, back up to normal road pressure before returning to tarmac. The exact number matters less than being able to hit it precisely and quickly, on every tyre, without it becoming a twenty-minute production each way.


Recovery Points & Flag Mount

Front, Rear, and the One Thing Most Trucks Get Wrong

Front recovery points on most of these trucks are already reasonable, factory tow hooks or an aftermarket bar generally give you a legitimate front point. The rear is where most trucks fall short, because most of them have a factory tow hitch, and a tow hitch is not a recovery point.

⚠ Safety — Not Just a Technique Note

A factory ball hitch is rated for steady, controlled towing loads, not the sudden shock load of a kinetic recovery pull. Using a tow ball for recovery is a known way for the ball mount to shear off and become a projectile. Do not use your tow hitch as a rear recovery point, this is one of the few things in this guide worth treating as a hard rule rather than a preference.

The fix is straightforward: replace the ball with a hitch-mounted shackle receiver, giving one properly rated central point instead of relying on the tow ball. A single centred point at the rear is genuinely acceptable, this doesn't need to be a pair of points the way the front sometimes is.

Mount a flag alongside this, not as a separate project. Blind dune crests are a real collision risk, another vehicle can come over the same ridge from the opposite direction with no warning, and a properly rigid mount on a bull bar or roof rack, high enough to be seen over a crest before the vehicle itself appears, is the only thing that gives either driver time to react. A cheap, floppy, or spinning mount defeats the purpose entirely, this is worth doing properly rather than as an afterthought.


Convoy Reality

Why "Never Go Alone" Isn't Generic Advice Here

A vehicle bogged down in soft sand doesn't behave like its actual kerb weight, it behaves like something closer to four times that, once the sand has built up resistance around the tyres and undercarriage. That's not a scare figure, it's the practical reason convoy composition matters, whoever you're travelling with needs a vehicle genuinely capable of moving that load, not just a second car for company. Check this before you need it, not after.


Underbody Protection

Minimal, Targeted, Not Full Armour

Ground clearance itself generally isn't the issue for dune driving the way it is for rock crawling, most of these trucks have enough for typical GCC use as they sit. What's worth protecting is the specific vulnerable components underneath, not the whole underside.

This is a deliberately minimal list. Full underbody armour is a real category of product for people doing genuinely technical terrain, that's not what most GCC dune driving demands, and this site would rather tell you the honest minimum than sell you more than the use case justifies.

Deliberately Not Included — Lift Kit
A suspension lift isn't included in this list on purpose. It solves a clearance problem that dune driving generally doesn't have, clearance matters far more for rocks and technical obstacles than for soft sand, where flotation and tyre management do the actual work. If you're planning genuinely technical terrain beyond typical GCC dune use, that's a different conversation, but for the desert driving this guide is written around, it's not part of the honest minimum.

The Winch Question

A Genuine Option, Not the Centrepiece

Winches are real, useful, and not uncommon on GCC-prepared trucks, particularly for a solo recovery from a deep bowl where no convoy partner can get a clean pull angle. But they are one option among several, not the default starting point US-style content often assumes. Kinetic recovery ropes between vehicles, used correctly with the rated points covered above, handle the overwhelming majority of GCC sand recoveries. Treat a winch as something to add once the fundamentals above are sorted, not before.
