Why a Diesel Truck Solved This Problem for You Already
A vacuum brake booster needs, unsurprisingly, engine vacuum, and it needs a fairly consistent supply of it. Diesel engines don't generate meaningful vacuum, and big-block gas engines with aggressive cams often don't either, which is exactly why GM fitted hydroboost as standard on the 6.5L diesel and 7.4L big-block trucks from the factory. Hydroboost uses hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump instead of engine vacuum, which means the same donor part GM already engineered and tested for thirty years is sitting in scrapyards and parts trucks, not something you're inventing from scratch.
The appeal beyond fixing a vacuum problem is pedal feel. Hydroboost is generally firmer and more immediate than a vacuum booster, which is part of why people with perfectly adequate vacuum still choose to convert.

These three exist as a genuinely priced used market because GM built and sold them for thirty years. Buying reman or new equivalents defeats the entire economic logic of this swap, you'd be paying multiples of the donor-truck price for the same part. These are the parts that genuinely make sense to buy new, they're consumables and fittings that don't have a meaningful used market, and running old lines or a worn filter on a fresh donor unit is a false economy.

On reusing the stock power steering pump: Some owners simply T into the return line and keep the original half-ton pump, and it does work. But hydroboost is designed around a specific pressure output, and the stock pump falls short of that spec. If pedal feel matters to you as much as the conversion itself, the correct-pressure pump is worth the extra cost. If budget is the priority and you're not chasing perfect pedal feel, the T-fitting approach is a workable compromise, not a failure.

Two different sourcing jobs here. The new-buy lines, filter and cooler are ordinary auto electrical/parts stock, any competent Sharjah Industrial supplier can provide these once listed on OBScure Parts. The donor hydroboost, master cylinder and pushrod are a different search entirely, scrapyards and parts-out trucks, not a parts counter. Verified named contacts for both are coming shortly, checked in person rather than pulled from a directory. In the meantime, bring the donor table above with you, half-ton diesel or big-block, pre-1995, and don't get talked into a 2500HD or 3500 unit because it's the one on the shelf.
The Process
- Confirm the donor hydroboost and master cylinder match your truck's era and GVWR class before starting, using the table above.
- Remove the existing vacuum booster and master cylinder. Disconnect the vacuum line, it won't be needed.
- Bench bleed the new hydroboost-specific master cylinder before fitting it.
- Mount the hydroboost unit, connect the pushrod, and check fit against the brake light switch, the hydroboost rod is a different thickness to the vacuum booster rod and this is a common sticking point.
- Fit the master cylinder to the hydroboost unit and reconnect the two brake lines. Bleed the brakes normally, pre-1995 RWAL has its own bleeder screw.
- Remove the old pressure line between the power steering pump and steering gear. Leave the return line connected for now.
- Fit the new pressure line from the pump to the hydroboost, the new pressure line from the hydroboost to the steering gear, and the new return line from the hydroboost to the pump reservoir.
- Fit the inline power steering filter and, if using one, the power steering cooler on the return line.
- Fill the system with power steering fluid. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock to lock several times while applying the brakes to purge air from the system, then shut off, top up, and restart, checking for leaks.
- Road test at low speed first, confirming firm brake pedal feel and normal steering assist before treating the job as finished.

Bleed the brakes using the RWAL bleeder screw, and purge air from the power steering system by turning the wheel lock to lock with the engine running before final road test."
