The first problem is age. These systems are three decades old, in a climate considerably harsher on AC hardware than the one they were designed for. Hoses that were never quite as leak-proof as later "barrier" hose designs, condensers with corroded fins, and compressors that have been cycling on and off in 45°C heat for thirty summers. Something failing at this point isn't bad luck, it's the expected outcome.
The second problem is refrigerant. Trucks built before 1994 left the factory on R12, which is no longer produced and increasingly expensive and hard to source. 1994 was a mixed transition year, some trucks got R12, some got early R134a, you have to check yours rather than assume from the year alone. 1995 onward left the factory on R134a. If your truck predates that and the system needs opening up for any reason, this is the point to convert properly rather than chase R12 top-ups indefinitely.

Refrigerant recovery must be handled by someone with the right equipment, this isn't a DIY-with-a-can-of-134a job if the system needs opening up.
The Process
- Confirm whether the system is R12 or R134a using the table above before ordering any parts.
- Have any remaining refrigerant properly recovered by someone with the correct equipment — never vented to atmosphere.
- Flush the condenser, both AC lines, and the evaporator core with dedicated AC flush solvent and compressed air. This step is not optional if the old compressor failed internally.
- Replace the compressor, orifice tube, and accumulator/receiver-drier together.
- Replace the condenser if it won't flush clean, or as part of a full retrofit.
- Fit R134a service port adapters if converting from R12 threaded fittings.
- Replace O-rings at every joint opened during the work, using HNBR-type rings rated for R134a.
- Add the correct oil, PAG or Ester per your supplier's guidance, split between the compressor and accumulator as specified, not guessed.
- Pull a vacuum and hold it to confirm no leaks before charging.
- Charge with R134a at roughly 10-15% less than the equivalent R12 charge amount would have been, and verify performance against expected pressures for ambient temperature.
